Posters and Pianos
Meanwhile beyond the church doors posters called out to Canadian men:

Here's your chance. It's MEN We Want!
You are not exceptions. Join Now!
The Thin Khaki line keeps the Fate of Belgium from your hearth and Home. Get into Khaki Now!

And, women were not exempt. One poster from 1914 reads: To the Women of Canada. Won't You Help and Send a Man to Enlist Today?

In the parlours of the nation, sheet music promoting war, recruitment and valour was being played by the folks on the homefront. Songs like "He's Doing His Bit - Are You?," "The Call for Soldiers," "We'll Love You More When You Come Back Than When You Went Away" and "There's Fighting Going On. Are You In?" were constant reminders to the "slackers" and "shirkers" of Canada to enlist. As the war years wore on, and casualties returned from the battlefields, the songs were not played as often.

  Canadian gunners in action
Canadian men faced a constant pressure to enlist and join their fellow men in action or risk being seen as a coward or a shirker.
