 guns,
artillery, barbed wire and the even more modern horrors of poison gas and powerful
bombs, exploded the naive myth that war could be glorious. The war would claim
between eight and ten million lives, would wound almost 20 million. Canada alone
lost 60,661 men and women, with another 172,950 wounded, many of them maimed
and disfigured for life.
Though there was little glory in the carnage of the Great War, there were
many examples of great personal courage and stunning valour, including many acts
of self-sacrifice and bravery. |
