It
is estimated that 70 per cent of the men were killed or wounded in the attack,
including Flowerdew, who received wounds to both thighs, but the Canadians took
the position. Flowerdew succumbed to his wounds and died at the age of 33.
In battle after battle there were accounts of amazing bravery: soldiers charging
German machine-gun positions; advancing against heavily fortified pillboxes;
risking their lives to save fallen comrades; battling, sometimes hand-to-hand,
against daunting odds. . . the stories are almost endless. |
