Women
Overview
With many of their husbands, sons or brothers fighting in the Great War,
it was left to Canadian women to take up the challenge of supplying labour for
farm, shop and factory in a country busy feeding the relentless war machine.
As the war continued into its final stages it was also women who were the most
vigilant about avoiding food waste, being thrifty and recycling materials that
could be used in the war effort.
And hundreds of women took an even more direct role in the war effort as Nursing
Sisters who worked in dangerous nursing stations close to the front line or in
field hospitals caring for the thousands of wounded and dying soldiers the war
churned out.

During the war, women were the main audience for these kinds of messages that
encouraged thrift and cutting back on fuel, flour and other essentials. |
