anger erupted in a riot at Kimmel Park, a camp near Liverpool. In the alcohol-fueled
disruption, five soldiers were killed and 23 injured, and the news sent shock
waves through the army.
Despite all these problems, demobilization was in fact relatively quick and efficient.

May, 1919, most of the men had been returned to Canada. There, they would find
that the trains could not move more than 30,000 men per month from the east coast
ports inland to their native cities and towns. But when they did arrive home,
the soldiers were greeted by waving flags, marching bands and speeches. |
