The Western Front was a 700-mile-long snake of trenches reaching from
the North Sea to the mountains of Switzerland. It was here where most of the
Canadian battle action would take place. And, Neuve-Chapelle was the first time
the green troops of Canada saw any of that action. It was not, however, the first
battle for the Indian, French and British troops. By the time the Canadians arrived,
the Allies had already suffered heavy losses at Ypres, Marne and Mons. But, though
needed, the Canadians weren't battle-honed enough to play a main role in the
Neuve-Chapelle battle. That would come later, when they would prove their frontline
worth.
